Rediscovering Your Roots

A Guide to Reconnecting with Your Cultural Heritage and Identity

You do not need the whole story to begin.

Rediscovering Your Roots is a practical guide for anyone who wants to reconnect with, deepen, or better understand their cultural heritage.

Whether you are just beginning to explore, ready to go deeper, helping someone you love connect with their heritage, or thinking about what you want to preserve and pass on, this book can help. It offers reflection, stories, exercises, prompts, and practical tools you can use in your own way.

Why I Wrote It

I wrote the guide I wish I had.

I grew up wanting a stronger connection to my Dominican and Jamaican heritage, but I did not have a roadmap for how to build one.

I researched, asked questions, moved closer to family and community, and slowly found my own way.

Years later, becoming the mother of an Ethiopian daughter made those questions even more important. I wanted her to have access to the culture, relationships, experiences, and knowledge that helped her understand where she came from.

Rediscovering Your Roots grew from those experiences. It is the practical guide I wish I had when I was trying to figure out where to begin and what to do next.

It also names a feeling many readers carry: cultural imposter syndrome, the sense that you are not “enough” to claim your own heritage.
